Ernest has been with Restore Harrow Green for four years and during that time he has progressed from Removal Porter to Operations Supervisor. Here’s his story in his own words:
"Before joining Restore Harrow Green, I hadn’t previously been in any full time employment. I had just come out of university and had no idea what career path I wanted to go down on. I signed up to the job centre, and after a week my job centre coach advised that I enrol on the [Growing Talent Scheme]. I had nothing to lose and a lot of free time so I went along. I passed the initial screening, then I was invited to attend employer “speed dating”. At the end of the process I was left with a choice between two companies but I chose Restore Harrow Green as the work sounded more interesting and less mundane. Initially working for Harrow Green was tough due to the early starts, long hours and the heavy lifting but I enjoyed the feeling of contributing to society and earning a bit of money. My first role at Harrow Green was as a removal porter, a role which I never envisioned for myself, but which I ended up doing for about 18 months. Since then I’ve moved into the operations department, mainly doing admin work."
Why did you choose to work for Restore Harrow Green?
I chose to work for RHG because my initial impressions were good and I thought there was a lot of skills I could take from the job.
How did the Growing Talent programme benefit you in terms of new skills and workplace confidence?
It gave me the first steps into employment and I believe I have taken advantage of most opportunities given to me.
What’s the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is that no two days are the same and that I work pretty much on a day to day basis learning and experiencing new things as I go along.
Where do you see your future now that you’ve benefited from this training/opportunity?
For the immediate future I still see myself at Restore Harrow Green, but beyond that who knows, hopefully still moving up the career ladder.
What advice would you give to others in a similar position?
I would say take all opportunities given to you, work hard and smart and that no work is beneath you.
